What is sterling silver?
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Pure silver is generally too soft for producing jewellery, so the silver is alloyed with copper to give strength whilst preserving the precious metal content.
What is fine silver?
Fine silver is 99.9% silver, and is purer than sterling silver but generally softer. Fine silver jewellery is usually crafted using Japanese silver clay.
How to store silver jewellery
If sterling silver jewellery is left open to the air for a long time it will start to tarnish and turn black.
The best place to store silver jewellery is in an airtight bag, inside a jewellery box. Store away from wood, coins, wool and rubber - these items can all speed up the tarnishing process of silver jewellery.
Ensure you clean jewellery before storing it away for a long period of time. This will remove any oils or dirt that has built up on the item.
How to clean jewellery
The best way to clean jewellery is to rub gently with a soft cotton cloth or flannel to help remove tarnish. Clean jewellery regularly to help prevent tarnish and keep it scratch free. If you need to wash your sterling jewellery do so in mild soapy warm water. Rinse in warm water and dry thoroughly before storage.
Always clean jewellery in a bowl of water, never in the sink. You don't want to lose your favourite item down the plughole.
Silver paste cleaners are available to clean jewellery, but constant use can cause scratching, and these cleaners can damage gemstones such as turquoise, opals and pearls.
How to keep sterling silver jewellery looking good
Wearing regularly helps to prevent tarnishing of sterling silver jewellery. In addition, clean jewellery often, and avoid contact with makeup, perfume, hairspray and chlorine, as these substances can all damage sterling silver jewellery.
